Carlson is originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, and attended the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield. In addition to acting, she modeled, including ad campaigns with Miller Lite, Rembrandt, and Oliver People Sunglasses

In 2004, Carlson signed on to star in the straight-to-video sequel “Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation,” a move that caused some confusion for fans of American Idol Kelly Clarkson as news sites mistakenly reported that the pop star would be taking on the role. But viewers had no doubt that alien ass-kicking Lt. Charlie Soda was played by none other than Carlson, as the film famously included nude scenes.

She is a spokesperson for the Smile Network, a Minnesota-based humanitarian organization that provides life altering reconstructive surgeries and related healthcare services to impoverished children and young adults in developing countries.
